I was a little late to the party for this one. But I really like SMTV, especially the expanded one.

Actually beats Dragon Quest if you ask me.

Everything in this game is off the scale, you are a god fighting other gods. Well, kind of a half god.
And God is dead, and Lucifer is challenging you to defy the cycle of reincarnation.

The monster design is the best. So's the sound track.

I actually did find all the Miman.

So from this series came Persona, which is also really really good.

I played Persona before I played this.
